FOR TEACHERS
Teachers will find dozens of opportunities to help students explore Monterey’s history in all its fascinating aspects. You might begin by exploring this website and the links from each page in our nine themes: they will take you to Internet sites with even more in-depth information. Then visit the websites of our three partner organizations to learn about special learning opportunities for students here in Monterey itself.
The Monterey Public Library staff offers programs in which teachers can combine a Library visit with historic field trips. For example, teachers can request a program entitled, "Children and Books of Long Ago," and then visit the nearby Colton Hall Museum and other historic adobes. Other programs investigate Native American tribes of the Monterey area, our maritime history, and more. Call 831-646-3934 for more information.
Monterey History & Art Association offers an array of ‘Living History Lab’ experiences for children in third, fourth and fifth grades, in which they ‘live’ the experiences of a Rumsien Indian, a sailor from Monterey’s whaling days, or a Californio from the time of the great ranchos. Call 831-372-2608 extension 17 for details.
In addition to the guided tours of Monterey State Historic Park buildings, California State Parks also occasionally offers educational programs expressly for children. Visit their website for more information.
